Google reportedly planning Pixel 3 for October, and the XL model will have a notch

Google reportedly planning Pixel 3 for October, and the XL model will have a notch The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will debut in October and retain Verizon as the exclusive US carrier, according to Bloomberg. That’s the same sales strategy that was in place for the prior two generations of Google’s smartphones; you’ll again be able to purchase the new phones unlocked direct from Google. The XL-sized Pixel 3 will reportedly have a notch at the top of its display. That shouldn’t come as a surprise when you consider all the changes Google has made to make Android P more friendly to display cutouts. It will feature a “nearly edge-to-edge screen” and a chin at the bottom. So, take a look at the OnePlus 6 or LG G7 and you’re probably on the right track as to what the Pixel 3 XL will look like. Bloomberg claims that the Pixel 3 XL’s notch won’t be as wide as the iPhone X’s, but says it’s “taller.” Maybe that means it cuts into the display more? Google’s Pixel 3 XL will reportedly h

Nvidia's HGX-2 fuses high-performance and AI computing into one platform

Nvidia's HGX-2 fuses high-performance and AI computing into one platform NVIDIA HAS TAKEN the covers of HGX-2, a cloud server platform designed to mix high performance and artificial intelligence (AI) computing into a unified architecture. Featuring double precision floating point cores in the form of FP64 and FP32, HGX-2 has been designed to crunch calculations for scientific and simulation workloads while using FG16 and Int8 data to train AIs and power their uses - commonly referred to as inference. Putting that into good old plain English; HGX-2 is a powerful data centre grade platform for handling high-end workloads like 3D modelling and simulation in the cloud and compute-intensive AI work. It essentially forms the building blocks on which customer companies can build their own advanced systems for high-performance computing and AI tasks. Nvidia boasted that HGX-2 can achieve "record AI training speeds of 15,500 images per second on the ResNet-50 tr

Dino-killing asteroid caused Earth to heat up for 1,00,000 years

Dino-killing asteroid caused Earth to heat up for 1,00,000 years The monumental event is a rare case where Earth's systems were perturbed at a rate greater than what's occurring now from human activity The Chicxulub asteroid - which caused the extinction of dinosaurs - drove a long-lasting era of global warming when it smashed into Earth 65 million years ago, with a rapid temperature increase of 5-degree Celsius that endured for roughly 100,000 years, a study has found. The monumental event is a rare case where Earth's systems were perturbed at a rate greater than what's occurring now from human activity.   It provides valuable insights into what may happen from sudden, extreme environmental changes. The after-effects of the Chicxulub impact remain debated, with some scientists advocating that soot within the atmosphere blocked out the Sun sufficiently to drive global cooling. Others suggest that carbon released from the Earth's

Cloud computing sticker shock is now a monthly occurrence at many companies

Cloud computing sticker shock is now a monthly occurrence at many companies Spinning up that AWS or Azure instance at the snap of a finger may be a beautiful thing to behold, but sometimes the application, testbed or whatever it may be gets abandoned and forgotten -- but still appears on monthly bills, along with all the other spun-up but not powered-down services. Or, on the opposite extreme, a cloud service becomes very popular and well-used, to the point in which it is gobbling gigabytes upon gigabytes of data or activity -- and causing unanticipated spikes in monthly bills. That ongoing sticker shock tops the list of cloud pain points, the survey shows -- 37 percent of organizations listing unpredictable costs as a top issue. Add to that the lack of visibility into cloud resource usage - something nearly one-third of companies struggle with. As services get gobbled up, the meter keeps running. A view From Plane On the outset, the low-hanging fruit of cloud migra

NASA can still teach private space sector lessons about going into outer space

NASA can still teach private space sector lessons about going into outer space Even as private companies dominate the next phase of space travel, record-setting astronaut Peggy Whitson explained why NASA is still necessary.  NASA does "the real deep space exploration that allows commercial providers to have the means for going," she told CNBC.  Bill Ingalls | NASA | Getty Images Nowadays, discussions about the future of space are more likely to reference private companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin than  NASA  — the federal agency responsible for putting a man on the moon. On Thursday, the Trump administration released a set of guidelines to reform and update U.S. policy toward private space endeavors. Tellingly, NASA's sole mention came  at the end of the document announcing  President  Donald Trump 's directive, where he called for the space agency to "return American astronauts to the moon, followed by human missi
